-when dividing 9 by 2, 2 can only fit into number 9 four times. Once you subtract 9 from 8 you are left with the remainder 1.
As the problem was set up 9/2 2 is the denominator. And 1 (the remainder is the numerator). 4 is the whole number because 2 x 4 is 8 which was the only number possible to fit into 9.
