it can form 3 bonds because 1 electron is in each of the 3 2p orbitals. 

The electron configuration of nitrogen (atomic number 7) is 1s2 2s2 2px1 2py1 2pz1 

so specifically the 2p oribital is : 2px1 2py1 2pz1
