The description of Grendel's murder of the first man in the hall is gruesome. The monster attacks the man so quickly that he has no chance to defend himself. And he does not just kill the man-he mauls and then partially eats him. Grendel's own death is described in lines 840-851. Why might this description have been satisfying for listeners?
